Past Voices

The writers who came before us.

Brava Life features a returning section we call Past Voices — revisited essays and columns from the great Filipino writers of previous generations, presented with contemporary commentary. These are not reprints. They are acts of remembrance: a conversation across time between a voice that shaped the country's literary culture and the reader who holds the magazine today.

Issue No. 1 features a revisited essay by Nick Joaquin, presented with new editorial framing.

Nick Joaquin

Essayist, Novelist, Playwright · National Artist for Literature

Joaquin's essays on Filipino identity and the colonial experience remain among the most penetrating ever written. His work is revisited in Issue No. 1 with new editorial framing.

We are looking for the right voices.

We are building the editorial team and contributor pool for Issue No. 1 and beyond. We are looking for writers and photographers with deep knowledge of a specific Filipino place, practice, or cultural tradition — and the ability to write about it with patience and specificity.

We do not accept general lifestyle pitches. We are interested in stories that could not be told anywhere else.
